Agent Confidence on the Technical Frontier: What Vibe Coding Actually Taught Me

We were building a tool that lets users generate SQL queries from natural language — a classic vibe coding use case. The agent would parse a business question, look up the schema, and write the query. In the first week, we measured precision and recall on a set of 200 test questions. The agent had 87% accuracy on simple joins and 72% on multi-table aggregations. But here’s the kicker: when the agent was wrong, it was wrong with **high confidence**. The frontier of what agents can *do* expands rapidly. But the frontier of when to *trust* them expands slowly. If you’re building with agents today, here’s my advice: - **Don’t just measure accuracy.** Measure calibration error on your specific distribution. - **Build a confidence oracle.** It doesn’t have to be complex — a simple temperature-scaled logit with embedding similarity check can save you from confident mistakes. - **Assume distribution shift.** Your training data is a snapshot. Production data is a river. Monitor embedding drift weekly. I’ve seen teams spend months building better prompts. The teams that win spend that time building better confidence signals.
